Argentina, Bolivia & Chile: 
Mountains and Salt Deserts
13 Days 12 Nights

This incredible tour through Argentinian northwet, Uyuni Salt Flat and the Desert of Atacama combines beautiful landscapes with the possibility of enjoying the culture and customs of its inhabitants. The balanced amount of excursions and places to visit, allow us to enjoy the spectacular landscapes of Uyuni at Bolivia, the biggest Salt Flat of the world; the Altiplanics lagoons, the Geysers, Andean Volcanos, and the desert. You will have a much more intimate and complete look at the Atacama region.

At the southern Andes of Bolivia, there is a highland region formed by salt flats, colored lagoons, volcanoes, deserts, hot springs, flora and fauna, come and get ready to enjoy this amazing landscapes. 

Day 1  - Arrival Salta 

We welcome you at Salta airport. Transfer to your hotel.

Day 2  - Salta - Cafayate

This day starts driving from Salta city to the south, through route 68 traversing the Lerma Valley and its historical towns. We reach Quebrada de las Conchas (the Shell´s Gorge), where wind and water erosion carved curious shapes on the rocks (The Amphitheater, Devil´s throat, The Toad, The Castles, among others). When we arrive to Cafayate, we visit some wineries, famous for their production of Torrontes, with special characteristics due to the particularities of the climate and land. After lunch, transfer to your selected hotel.

Day 3  - Cafayate - Salta 

After breakfast, the morning is free to explore this beautiful town. After lunch, we transfer bac to Salta through Quebrada de las Conchas (the Shells´ Gorge) and the Lerma Valley.

Day 4 -  Salta - Salinas Grandes - Purmamarca - Tilcara 

Early, after breakfast we start our day of traveling through incredible landscapes. We make a parallel route of the Train of the Clouds railway by  Quebrada del Toro. Then we continue, starting the ascent until reaching 4080 meters above sea level and get to San Antonio de los Cobres. We make a break for lunch and enjoy some of the typical meals offered in the village. Back in the vehicle, we cross route 40 until we reach Salinas Grandes, right on the border between Salta and Jujuy. Then we start the descent by Cuesta de Lipán where condors are usually seen. We arrive at  Purmamarca town and its Hill of Seven Colors. We continue our trip to Tilcara, where we spend the night.

Day 5  - Quebrada de Humahuaca - Tilcara

Leaving from Purmamarca, we enter the Quebrada de Humahuaca, passing through the Posta de Hornillos, continuing towards the town of Tilcara. We continue to Huacalera, passing through the Tropic of Capricorn, from where you can see the colors of the hill called “Pollera de la Colla”. We visit the mystical Church of Uquía, where the paintings of the Arcabuceros Angels (important vestige in the area of ​​the Cuzqueña school) are located. Then we arrive in Humahuaca and admire its important Cathedral and the Independence Monument (El Indio) by the sculptor Soto Avendaño. After lunch we return to Tilcara where we spend the night.

Day 6 - Tilcara - Uyuni

After breakfast, we take a regular bus to La Quiaca, the city at the border between Argentina and Bolivia. We arrive at Villazón (Bolivia) and we go to the train station to take the train to Uyuni, where we arrive around 11 pm. We go to out hotel to spend the night and get ready for the adventure starting the following day.

A person from our staff will meet you in La Quiaca to assist you crossing the border and taking the bus in Villazón.

Bolivia is a country which is very different to anything you will have experienced before. Although this means it is not the easiest place to travel, this is also what makes it so special. Through the years travelling to this area, we have come to love this wonderfully different country but we know that we should always expect to encounter some difficulties along the way.

This is “once in lifetime” kind of trip. If you are able to travel with a lot of patience and a healthy sense of humor, then we know that you - like all of us - will be captivated by what Bolivia has to offer. This is a trip you will tell others for the rest of your life.

 

Day 7  - Salar de Uyuni

We leave Uyuni around 11:00 hs. Heading to Colchani (22 Km to the north of Uyuni), a little village of built around the exploitation and refinery of salt. We enter the town walking through the piles and attending a demonstration of the extraction of the salt blocks. We can visit the stores, the salt hotels and the Isla Lomo Pescado, appreciating the huge cactus and an outstanding panoramic from the view point. Box lunch at the Island and continue our walk to San Juan de Chuvica, where we spend the night in a rustic refuge.

Day 8  - Ollague Volcano & altiplanic lagoons

An incredible day of “I have never seen this in my life before” is ahead of us. Leaving around 08:00 hs. after breakfast, to visit the altiplanic Lagoons: Cañapa, Hedionda y Ramadita. Then we through the desert of Siloli to see the Tree of Stone. Visit to Laguna Colorada where we can appreciate the pink Flemings and major Andean fauna such as vicuña, suri or andean ñandú. We spend the night at another basic refuge near Laguna Colorada.

Day 9 - Uyuni - San Pedro de Atacama 

We prepare for a long day. The tour starts early at 05:00 am where we must be warm to start our visit to the Geisers (4,950 meters above sea level) where you can observe volcanic activity, fumaroles that emanate toxic gas, where lava boils with a strong smell of Then, then we can enjoy a natural hot bath in Aguas Termales (280C to 300C), where a breakfast will also be served. We will pass through the Dalí Desert where rock formations are observed, and then continue visiting Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde that are at the foot of the Licancabur Volcano (5,930 meters above sea level).

Then we will go to the Bolivia-Chile border, called Hito Cajones, to continue our trip to San Pedro de Atacama.

Day 10 - Piedras Rojas, Lagunas Altiplánicas & Salar de Atacama 

This day begins with a visit to Laguna Chaxa, a scene of spectacular beauty that is divided into several water mirrors where a large number of flamingos and other birds inhabit such as large and small parinas. Then we drive towards the Altiplano to reach the Piedras Rojas viewpoint, where we can observe a volcanic conglomerate formed from the oxidation of the iron present in that place. Later we will visit the Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons at more than 4,200 meters above sea level. Surrounded by imposing volcanoes originated by the elevation of the Andes Mountains, and habitat of a great variety of birds, they are a truly amazing destination. The landscape gives us breathtaking views of the Licancabur and Lascar volcanoes. We continue to the town of Toconao, built with volcanic stone, it stands out for its heritage architecture, with the church of San Lucas, and its bell tower, declared a National Monument. Agriculture and handicrafts are the main source of work for its inhabitants. In the afternoon we return to our hotel in San Pedro de Atacama.

Day 11 - San Pedro de Atacama

This is a free day to explore the area. You can enjoy any of the many activities San Pedro de Atacama offers.

Day 12 - San Pedro de Atacama - Salta
We said goodbye early to San Pedro de Atacama and by bus we crossed the Andes Mountains entering Argentina on an unforgettable tour that through the Jama pass. Upon arriving in Salta, we moved to the hotel.

Day 13  - Departure Salta 

At the indicated time, according to your flight, transfer to Salta airport.
